![]() ![]() ![]() If bolstering the morale of a country in the thick of World War II isn’t the sole purpose of Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, it’s certainly one of the primary reasons it exists, retelling the story of the first air raid on Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbor. War movies released during wartime rarely have time to reflect. That eliminates many great movies, but it leaves room for many others, starting with a film made at the height of World War II in an attempt to help rally a nation with a story of an operation whose success required secrecy, extensive training, and beating overwhelming odds. Also excluded are films that blur genres, like the military science fiction of Starship Troopers and Aliens (even if the latter does have a lot to say about the Vietnam War). ![]() It also leaves films primarily about the Holocaust out of consideration, as they seem substantively different from other sorts of war films. Miniver, Forbidden Games, Hope and Glory) or of wartime stories whose action rests far away from the battlefield ( Casablanca). That means no films about the experience of returning from war ( Coming Home, The Best Years of Our Lives, First Blood) or of civilian life during wartime ( Mrs. Each offers a vision that asks viewers to consider and understand the experience of war, be it in the trenches of World War I, the wilderness skirmishes of Civil War militias, or the still-ongoing conflicts that have helped define 21st-century warfare.Ĭompiled as Sam Mendes’s stylistically audacious World War I film, 1917, hit theaters, this list opts for a somewhat narrow definition of a war movie, focusing on films that deal with the experiences of soldiers during wartime. Another director, Sam Fuller, once offered a quote that doesn’t necessarily contradict Truffaut’s observation but better explains the impulse to make war movies: “A war film’s objective, no matter how personal or emotional, is to make a viewer feel war.” The films selected for this list of the genre’s most essential entries often have little in common, but they do share that. Maybe the ultimate purpose of a war movie is to let others hear the force of these stories. A World War II film made in the midst of the war, for instance, might serve a propagandist purpose than one made after the war ends, when there’s more room for nuance and complexity, but it also might not. War movies reflect the artistic impulses of their creators, but they also reflect the attitudes of the times and places in which they were created. So, like other inescapable elements of the human experience, we tell stories about war, stories that reflect our attitudes toward it, and how they shift over time. It’s a lot to ask, especially since war seems to be baked into human existence. Is it true that movies glamorize whatever they touch, no matter how horrific? And if a war movie isn’t to sound a warning against war, what purpose does it serve? Even if Truffaut’s wrong - and it’s hard to see his observation applying to at least some of the movies on this list - it might be best to remove the burden of making the world a better place from war movies. Lee Ermey, the real-life drill instructor who played the same in Full Metal Jacket, Swofford offered a remembrance in the New York Times with the headline “ Full Metal Jacket Seduced My Generation and Sent Us to War.”) In Anthony Swofford’s Gulf War memoir Jarhead, Swofford recalls joining fellow recruits in getting pumped up while watching Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket, two of the most famous films about the horrors of war. Every film about war ends up being pro-war.” The evidence often bears him out. For example, some films claim to be antiwar, but I don’t think I’ve really seen an antiwar film. Asked why there’s little killing in his films, Truffaut replied, “I find that violence is very ambiguous in movies. Speaking to Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune in 1973, Francois Truffaut made an observation that’s cast a shadow over war movies ever since, even those seemingly opposed to war. ![]() Photo-Illustration: Vulture and Courtesy of the Studios ![]()

![]() ![]() We suggest visiting the Island of Paros between late April - early June, and mid-September - October - otherwise known as the shoulder season.ĭuring this time, the days are still long and the weather and sea are warm, but the crowds are smaller and more manageable, making the island extremely pleasant. Like most of Mediterranean Europe, Paros is prone to the extreme summer heat, and while the mountain villages provide some respite, it can still get super hot in Lefkes, so we’d avoid visiting during midday unless you plan to sit in a taverna as sip beer for hours. Alternatively, early-mid morning is a wonderful time to stroll the streets, however, be warned, most cafes, tavernas, and stores don’t open until around 9 am. The best time to visit Lefkes is during the late afternoon when the town comes alive with locals and tourists, and the timeworn streets are bathed in the glorious summer glow. ![]() Love our photos? They were all edited using our Europe Preset Pack, which you can purchase here! This guide is designed to help you enjoy the best of Lefkes for yourself, whether visiting for an hour or a day. Prodromos, with its jasmine and honeysuckle-lined streets, and the delicious Kallitechniko cafe, is worth a stop for an hour or two, while pretty Marpissa, with its insta-famous pink door and timeless streets, is another must-see on Paros. Popular things to do include walking the ancient Byzantine Road (more on that below), strolling the outrageously beautiful alleys, sipping coffee under the bougainvillaea at Kafénion, enjoying a Greek pastry or four at the historical Stratis bakery, stepping inside the grand Triada church, or simply admiring the view over a delicious meal at Chrisoula.įurther down the road (or path if you’re walking the Byzantine Road)are a few other Paros villages that we feel are worth your time. We visited Lefkes on four separate occasions, enamoured by its bougainvillaea-lined squares, photographic alleys, and sense of calm - time really stands still here, and you can’t help but embrace it. Now, it’s a popular day trip for those wanting to visit a truly traditional Greek village, and this tourism boom has seen prosperity return to the village and an influx in inhabitants keen to regenerate Lefkes to its former glory. Its protected position in inland Paros also led it to become the farming epicentre of the island. At one point, it was even the capital of Paros, and it’s evident today in its grand (and somewhat dilapidated) old buildings. The town was built in the 17th century, a protected enclave from the rampant piracy that plagued the Mediterranean waters during this period. Surrounded by olive groves and pine forests in verdant hills of interior Paros, Lefkes is a quintessentially historic Cycladic village boasting narrow stone laneways, stunning traditional and neo-classical architecture, and delicious tavernas, friendly locals, and that pleasant vibe found only in Greece. ![]() Spend more than five minutes in Lefkes village and you’ll soon realise you never want to leave. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You only need a camera and an internet connection, and you can monitor your printers without needing a dedicated person. Hawaii, the last of the 50 states, became a state in 1959. Not even by 1918 were all the states in the Union yet. Why is this the case? Well, for one thing, not all the states had become states yet when the railroad companies started using their time zones in 1883. It just depends on whether you’re in eastern or western Tennessee. So, as you take a trip through Tennessee, you might see clocks that say two different times. And Idaho and Oregon are part of both the Mountain and Pacific time zones. The Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific time zones were now enforced by federal law. Central Time and Mountain Time might differ by an hour, but they differed by exactly an hour.įinally, in 1918, Congress passed the Standard Time Act, which made the four time zones official. The agreement established an official time as well. An agreement between the major companies was put forth in 1883. Each time zone as you go west is one more hour behind. It divided the United States into four time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific. This arrangement was adopted by many countries. It wasn’t until 1878 that man named Sanford Fleming (who was born in Scotland but moved to Canada) proposed dividing the world into 24 time zones, each spaced a certain distance apart, according to measurements made on a globe. But nobody really had an idea yet that time zones were needed. Sundials, water clocks, and other time pieces marked the passage of the Sun across the sky, but nobody was talking about seconds, minutes, or hours way back then.Ī few hundred years ago, clocks and watches were invented and timekeeping became a focus for many people.
